Collection comprises correspondence, journals, reports, memos and photographs concerning Melvin Leroy Merritt's life and career with the United States Forest Service in Oregon, Alaska and the Philippines. The forest service materials, including field journals kept by Merritt and Juan Guthrie, document the areas under Merritt's supervision. The collection contains personal and family information, including a volume of family history written by Merritt's grandmother in 1909. The collection contains a wealth of information about the Forest Service and forests of Alaska, Oregon and the Philippines.

Melvin Leroy Merritt, son of Morris and Jennie Allnat Merritt, was born in 1879 near West Union, Iowa. Merritt grew up on a farm and attended Iowa State College in Ames. He graduated in 1903 with a degree in horticulture. In 1905, Merritt left Iowa for a position with the Bureau of Forestry in Manila, the Philippines, which he held for three years.
